Have you ever been invited to an IEP and you weren’t sure the purpose of the meeting? Here is short description of the different types of IEPs and their purposes.
Initial IEP Meeting
Students who are referred and evaluated for special education for the first time are provided an Initial IEP meeting to review the results of the assessments, discuss student needs, and determine eligibility for special education.
Annual IEP Meeting
IEP meetings must be held at least once a year by the next plan review due date. The purpose of this meeting is to review the student’s present levels of performance, develop or update goals, and determine supports, accommodations, and services to enable the student to make progress.
Triennial IEP Meeting
A student must be reevaluated every three years by the next eligibility due date to determine if he/she continues to be eligible for special education. The IEP team will review any assessment reports and gather feedback from the IEP team members to update present levels of performance. The IEP team will develop or update goals and determine supports, accommodations, and services to enable the student to make progress.
Interim IEP Meeting
Students who are newly enrolled must receive an Interim IEP within the first 30 days of enrollment. The IEP team will review the current IEP and determine if adjustments need to be made to accommodate the student’s new placement.
Amendment IEP Meeting
Changes can be made to the IEP at any point in time throughout the school year. The IEP team will meet to discuss the IEP and update the IEP with new information.
