We know that middle school for many students is a season of budding independence. Students are ready for more autonomy than they were in their elementary school days, but may not have all of the skills in place to truly be “on their own” in managing their time and academics. That’s why as a RISE team, we are here to support you in providing your student with the developmentally appropriate guardrails of accountability needed for their independence to bloom.
Wise Freedom
…students being held accountable to high expectations while also receiving unconditional support and respect.
(Z. Cohen, ACSD)
“Wise freedom” means recognizing that middle school students are in transition developmentally. Therefore, we need to find the ideal balance between allowing students space and tools to develop their independence, while also providing them age-appropriate accountability to support this development.
Ways to Provide Accountability
- Know your way around Canvas.
Learn how to view RISE grades in Canvas. - View Teacher Feedback
Be sure students are viewing teachers’ comments on their work so they can learn how to improve. - Make a Schedule – Work Every Day
Work with your student to create a daily work schedule that fits with their other activities and that helps them stay on top of regular assignments. Work is assigned in RISE classes daily, so students should plan accordingly. - Be Aware of What’s Happening in Class
View the most recent RISE newsletter and learn what teachers want you to know about your students’ classes.
Being familiar with the learning management system will help you stay connected with assignments, deadlines, and grades that your student should be aware of.
Ways to Provide Independence
- Let Them Fail (a little)
Giving students the opportunity to try things on their own for the first time helps them learn about their capabilities and their limits, and about where and how they can improve. - Encourage Reaching Out to Teachers
Show your student how to email their teacher through Canvas any time they have a question! RISE teachers are available and eager to help your student succeed. - Plan for Office Hours
Teachers’ office hours are listed in the RISE newsletter and on the home page of each class in Canvas. Encourage your student to include office hours in their weekly schedule. - Leverage Pear Deck
Pear Deck provides online, real-time 24/7 tutoring in any subject (and in multiple languages!) It is easy for students to use on their own, and there is no cost. Learn more about Pear Deck.
