Communication Supports
- Use pictures to communicate, especially for students who are non-verbal
- Give directions in short, clear steps
- Pause, listen, and wait so students have time to respond or initiate a conversation
- Prepare the student for what will be asked or discussed next
- Respond positively to student’s attempts to communicate
Organizational and Environmental Supports
- Create checklists
- Use visual schedules with images or pictures
- Create a routine and follow it consistently to reduce surprises
- Label the room clearly, and use pictures in the labels
- Use timers to stay on schedule and to indicate transitions
Motivational Supports
- Use technology and video games in instruction or as a reward
- Choose high-interest material such as information about athletes, musicians, or celebrities.
Social Supports
- Start with one-on-one instruction and then move to small groups when the student is ready
- Develop positive reinforcement procedures from others, such as cheering or clapping for good work or behavior.
