What is Assistive Technology?

Assistive Technology consists of “any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of children with disabilities” (IDEA). This could also include training and maintenance of the technology. Assistive Technology can consist of the device itself or a service that will be provided to the student to help them use the device.

What do I do if I have a child who may need an Assistive Technology device?

Consult with your Case Manager to discuss your concerns. It may be necessary to assess the child to determine their assistive technology needs. Once an AT evaluation has been conducted and the report is complete, the IEP team will meet to review the results and determine if any AT devices or services should be added to the IEP.

If you have further questions regarding Assistive Technology for your child, please contact the child’s Case Manager.
