Embracing the Season of Growth
As we step into March, the world around us begins to shift—winter loosens its grip, and signs of spring peek through in fresh blooms and longer days. Just like the changing seasons, homeschooling follows its own rhythms, and this time of year brings a wonderful opportunity to embrace fresh energy, new growth, and the natural curiosity that comes with new beginnings.
March is a month of transitions, making it a great time to explore themes of growth, renewal, and change in your homeschool. Whether it’s diving into nature studies as plants awaken, celebrating Pi Day (March 14) with some hands-on math fun, or exploring the contributions of women in history for Women’s History Month, there are endless ways to bring seasonal learning to life. This is also a great time to explore weather patterns, migration, gardening, and the science behind the changing seasons.
Feeling the mid-year homeschool slump? You’re not alone! March is a great time to shake things up—take the learning outside, try a new approach, or simply slow down and savor the journey. Field trips, creative projects, and even something as simple as reading outside can bring fresh energy to your days. Journaling springtime observations, incorporating art inspired by nature, or starting a small windowsill garden are simple ways to engage kids in hands-on learning.
This week, we’ve rounded up some resources and ideas to inspire your March homeschooling adventures:
🌿 Nature & Science: Try a simple plant-growing experiment, track seasonal changes in a nature journal, or explore the science of weather and ecosystems. (Pinterest March Homeschool Resources) 🧮 Pi Day Fun: Celebrate 3.14 with math-inspired baking, circle geometry activities, and fun games that bring numbers to life. (Pinterest Pi Day Resources) 📚 Women’s History Month: Read about inspiring women in history, watch documentaries, or create a timeline of key contributions across various fields. 🎭 Shaking Up the Routine: If you’re feeling stuck, try a new learning method—perhaps a unit study, a hands-on project, or a fresh daily rhythm that keeps things engaging.
📢 Important Reminder! If you plan to continue your homeschool learning journey with The Cottonwood School next year, be sure to complete your Intent to Return Form—sent to you by your HST—by this Friday to secure your spot for next year! Additionally, if you plan to enroll any siblings, please fill out the Enrollment Interest Form by Friday, March 14th, to ensure they receive priority enrollment.
March is full of opportunities to embrace growth, exploration, and discovery. Whether you’re diving into seasonal themes, engaging in hands-on learning, or simply soaking up the joy of homeschooling, this month offers so many ways to connect and learn together.
Kindly, Kara

By engaging with these practice tests, students can learn how to navigate the testing interface, familiarize themselves with the test tools, and apply all the vocabulary and test tips they’ve been absorbing throughout the school year. What a great way to boost student confidence and accelerate student achievement! Logging in is easy – simply have your student follow these CAASPP Practice Test login directions. (Video below)

Math Academic Vocabulary for Testing
Are you looking for a way to give your student’s math academic vocabulary a boost? If so, here is a cool tool for you to use!
Math vocabulary for each grade level
The vocabulary in the link above is organized by grade level and sourced from the state of California. The purpose of this list is to help students become familiar with the terms and reduce anxiety during the test, as unfamiliar vocabulary can sometimes make it hard to understand what a question is asking. By reviewing these words, students can feel more confident in their ability to interpret and respond to the questions accurately. It will help set them up for success!

RISE Spotlight – English 6 with Mrs. Hunt
"RISE English 6 students have been composing persuasive essays and presenting them in class. Each team was effective, and we all loved to watch and hear our classmates. Some were a bit nervous, but they persevered and were confident in their performances. I enjoyed this past week immensely, seeing the progress made by each student. Some students wore ties for their presentations (made by paper or borrowed from parents’ closets), which made the whole experience even more fun."
~Erin Hunt, English 6
|
In RISE English 6, students grow in writing, discussion, and reading analysis skills as they engage in laughter-producing conversation, group projects, and meaningful literary analysis. The students collaborate with each other and their teacher, Mrs. Hunt, to make sure everyone completes the year feeling confident in their ability to write organized stories and essays. Students can come to class with zero writing knowledge or with extensive writing experience – all will be guided and challenged at a level enabling progress and confidence.
🌟 Stay tuned each week for more sneak peeks into the dynamic and collaborative learning experiences happening in our Middle School RISE classrooms!

Big news! CCPA now has its very own pickleball court, and our students are loving it! What started as an idea quickly turned into an exciting new space where students can challenge their friends, stay active, and have a blast during lunch and after school. The energy on the court is electric- whether students are diving for shots, perfecting their backhand, or just cheering each other on from the sidelines, there’s never a dull moment. Pickleball is easy to learn but keeps the competition fierce, making it the perfect addition to our student hangout spots. At CCPA, we’re all about creating opportunities that get students excited about coming to school. Seeing them light up while playing just proves why this was such a great addition. This court isn’t just about playing the game! It’s about bringing people together, building community, and making school a place students want to be!

March is Women’s History Month:
"One is not born a woman, one becomes one."
– Simone de Beauvoir, existentialist philosopher
Welcome to our Women’s History Month Ambassador:
In celebration of Women’s History Month, I was asked to share a little about myself with our homeschooling community.
My name is Sasha Basha Martin, I joined The United States Coast Guard in 2007 and served for just shy of ten years. I met my spouse while active duty and stationed in Kodiak, AK. While we were stationed in Alameda, CA we welcomed our first child and I transitioned from Active duty to the reserves. I finished up my bachelors in Human Services with a minor in Psychology and Sociology, then made the decision to fully transition to being a civilian and military spouse so I applied to graduate school. I was accepted into a graduate program at The University of San Francisco for the Counseling Psychology program with marriage and family therapist and professional clinical counselor track. Shorty before graduating we welcomed our 3rd child and shorty after graduating we began homeschooling our oldest. In 2022 we relocated to El Dorado county after my spouse was medically retired from active duty military service.
This was when our family joined the Cottonwood family. We now have 3 of our 5 children enrolled and attending The Cottonwood School. My spouse is the primary homeschooling family though when I am not working as a therapist gaining hours toward licensure I love to help support with the homeschooling. We have Brewster (9) in 3rd grade, Jasmine (7) in 1st grade and Ragnar (5) in TK this year. Magnum (3) and Dahlia (1) are our teachers assistants. Part of what we love about homeschooling the ability to foster within our children that they are a capable, compassionate, loving children with great potential for success. We work to guide them through school with the belief that they will succeed. We find it important to provide them a space with caring and positive reinforcement. We give our children the gifts of time and patience to develop both academically and socially. We want to provide a safe space for them to become a successful and enthusiastic learners and develop the attitude that learning is an adventure so that they never stop learning.
In my spare time when not working or homeschooling I enjoy spending time with my family, gardening, painting, Yoga, meditation, time outdoors with nature, birdwatching and family walks.
