Looking Back to Look Ahead
One of the beautiful things about homeschooling is the flexibility to shape our children’s education in a way that works best for our families. But with that freedom comes the ongoing process of reflecting, adjusting, and planning ahead.
At this point in the year, you’ve likely settled into a rhythm—some things are working well, and others may need a little tweaking. Maybe you’ve discovered a curriculum that’s been a perfect fit or a new learning style that’s clicking for your child. Or perhaps you’ve realized that your schedule could use a little more breathing room or that your child thrives with more hands-on experiences. Wherever you are in the journey, this mid-year point is the perfect time to pause and ask: What’s working? What’s not? And what do we want to carry forward into next year?
As you reflect on this school year, it’s also a great time to start planning ahead! Our Intent to Return window is opening soon, along with priority enrollment for siblings of current students. If your family is ready to commit for another amazing year, be sure to mark your calendar!
We understand that planning for the future takes time, and we’re here to support you every step of the way! We are grateful to be part of your journey and look forward to what’s ahead!
However your journey is unfolding, know that you’re doing an incredible job, and your children are learning and growing in ways that can’t be measured only by checklists and lesson plans.
Here’s to finishing this year strong while looking ahead with confidence!
Kindly,
Kara Parkins

As we begin planning for the 2025-26 school year, it’s almost time for current families to complete the Intent to Return process and enroll any siblings who wish to join our school next year. Please review the important dates and details below, as these deadlines are firm and time-sensitive.
🔹 Intent to Return for Current Students: March 3 – March 7 All currently enrolled students must complete their Intent to Return form during this window to secure their spot for next year. Be sure to watch for an email from your HST with instructions and complete the process on time.
🔹 Sibling Enrollment: March 3 – March 14 Siblings of current students must be enrolled through our open enrollment process, but they will receive priority placement as long as all required documents and forms are submitted by the deadline. Now is a great time to start gathering any necessary documents to ensure a smooth enrollment process.
🔹Questions about TK age eligibility or Kindergarten age cut-offs? Please visit the enrollment page on our school website.
We encourage all families to carefully track these dates, pay close attention to email communications, and complete all required steps on time to secure enrollment for next year. If you have any questions, please reach out—we’re here to help!

Meet our Mobile Youth Coordinator – Samantha Woodbeck
My name is Samantha Woodbeck and I’ve been an HST with Cottonwood for the past 6 years and have served in the Mobile Youth Coordinator role for the last 4 years. I am also a homeschool mom.
Three things I’d like you to know about what I provide as the Mobile Youth Coordinator.
- I am here to support families experiencing homelessness and unique and transitional living situations, as well as offer support to our foster youth.
- Part of my job is to ensure that there are no barriers to these students accessing educational services, per the McKinney-Vento Act.
- I have established relationships with many local community resources within the five counties that our school serves and can help make sure families are connected in times of need whether it’s for food, medical, clothing, or other resources.
I am very passionate about the work I do within our school community. I am also extremely resourceful about finding ways to help families get what they need. Lastly, I am very sensitive to the varying nature of unique circumstances that many families may be experiencing during these times. Please reach out to me at any time.

Thank you to everyone who attended the Folsom indoor location last Thursday. We had such a great time seeing all the smiling faces and everyone showing off their athleticism. One of the best quotes from a student: “This was so much more fun than I thought it would be! Do I get to do this every year?”

How to Support Your Child in Opinion Writing (Part 3)
As part of your child’s preparation for the CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress), developing strong opinion writing skills is essential. We’ve discussed the first few steps in the last two weeks. Let’s continue with tips number 7-9!
7. Model Opinion Writing
Show your child how you might write an opinion piece. For example, you could write an opinion on a simple topic, such as “Should pets be allowed in the classroom?” as a model. Walk your child through the process of forming an opinion, supporting it with reasons, and concluding with a summary.
8. Encourage Reflection and Discussion
Before your child starts writing, engage them in a discussion about the topic. Talking through their thoughts will help them clarify their opinion and the reasons behind it. Use questions such as:
-
"What do you think about this topic?"
-
"Why do you feel that way?"
-
"Can you think of any reasons to support your view?"
These discussions will help your child think more deeply about their opinion and prepare them for the writing process.
9. Celebrate Their Effort and Improvement
Writing can be challenging, so be sure to acknowledge and celebrate your child’s effort, improvement, and persistence. Praise their ability to support their opinion with strong reasons and evidence, and encourage them to keep practicing!
|
Final Thoughts
The CAASPP opinion writing assessment is an opportunity for your child to demonstrate their critical thinking and writing skills. With your guidance and support, your child will not only be prepared for the test, but also become a more confident and effective writer in everyday life.
Thank you for being an active participant in your child’s learning process!
Happy prepping!

Read Across America
Read Across America Day is March 3, 2025! Mark your calendars as we will be holding a special celebration in Suite 100 with the Lending Library for our Mondays@CCC March event.
Please take this opportunity to explore diverse literature and resources, such as book lists tailored specifically to our school communities by Everybody Belongs on the Nest, or by asking at the Lending Library or your local county library.
Look for books that can offer “mirrors” where we can see ourselves in what we read. Please also seek out “window” books that help us see and understand others. Ideally, these books can even become “sliding glass doors” that provide access to other cultures and groups. Watch this one-minute video about Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors to find out more about this beautiful metaphor.
