A Fresh Start: Embracing the New Year in Homeschooling
Happy New Year, Cottonwood families! I hope you all had a peaceful and restful winter break, filled with moments of joy and relaxation. Now that we’re back, it’s time to embrace the new semester, and with it, a fresh start for our homeschooling journeys.
As we step into January and a new year, I want to encourage you not to get caught up in lofty resolutions or overwhelming goals. While it’s tempting to set big plans for the year ahead, homeschooling is all about balance and flexibility — there’s no need to try to do everything at once. Instead, think of January as an opportunity for small, meaningful shifts that can set the tone for the months to come.
If you’ve found yourself feeling a little out of sync after the break, don’t worry. It’s normal to need a bit of time to ease back into the groove. Start with the basics: organize your space, review your schedules, and focus on the learning you’ve been enjoying so far. Give yourself permission to make adjustments along the way. Homeschooling is a dynamic process, and flexibility is one of its greatest strengths.
Here are a few ideas to help you ease into the semester:
-
Set Simple, Achievable Goals – Rather than grandiose resolutions, set small goals that feel both attainable and meaningful. Perhaps it’s reading more books together as a family or exploring a new area of interest. Choose goals that will bring joy and spark curiosity. Check out 10 New Year’s Resolutions Worksheet Ideas for inspiration! (These awesome lessons were created for middle school and high school students but are adaptable.)
-
Embrace Winter Learning – January is a great time to tap into the wonders of winter! Explore topics related to the season — whether it’s studying the science behind snowflakes, diving into a unit on hibernation, or finding ways to get outside (even if it’s chilly). Here are some fun winter-themed learning ideas:
- Science of Snowflakes: Learn how snowflakes form and create your own crystal patterns using this guide from The Homeschool Scientist.
- Winter Nature Study: Explore hibernation and animal adaptations with this wildlife winter unit study.
- Outdoor Learning: Try winter nature walks or nature journaling. Many local parks and trails offer beautiful winter landscapes, perfect for outdoor learning.
-
Use Available Resources – The school offers a treasure trove of field trips, activities, and educational resources that can bring your lessons to life. Don’t hesitate to take advantage of these opportunities to supplement your curriculum and give your children a hands-on learning experience. Don’t forget to register for our February field trips tomorrow at 12:30 pm!
-
Celebrate Small Wins – Every step forward counts! Take time to reflect on the progress your family has made so far, no matter how big or small. Celebrate those moments, as they’ll keep you motivated and inspired throughout the semester. Consider using a learning journal to track milestones and reflect on your family’s achievements.
As we enter this new chapter, remember that homeschooling is a journey filled with ups and downs, but the heart of it all is to nurture a love for learning. Let’s focus on making each day count, rather than chasing perfection. The beauty of homeschooling lies in the process and the flexibility it offers, so take it one day at a time.
May this year be filled with inspiration, growth, and the joy of discovery. We’re so grateful to be on this journey with each of you, and we look forward to another amazing semester together.
Kindly,
Kara Parkins

Meet Our High School Counseling Team!
Here are three things they want you to know!
1. Your Success is a Team Effort
- For Students: Don’t be afraid to reach out for support. Counselors are here to help with academic challenges, mental health concerns, and planning for the future. Open communication is key to success.
- For Parents: Partner with the school. Stay involved in your student’s academic progress and personal development. Share concerns early to address issues before they grow.
2. Plan Ahead for Life After High School
- For Students: Start exploring career interests and educational pathways early. Whether it’s college, trade school, the military, or joining the workforce, having a plan helps reduce stress later.
- For Parents: Encourage exploration and keep options open. Support your student in researching scholarships, internships, and other opportunities. Deadlines for college applications and financial aid (like FAFSA) can approach quickly.
3. 4-Year Planning with an Individual Graduation Plan (IGP)
- For Students: The IGP is a powerful tool to help you navigate your high school journey. It’s not just about picking classes for the current year — it’s about looking ahead and setting yourself up for success in all four years. Think about:
- Graduation requirements.
- Career or college prerequisites.
- Opportunities like AP classes, dual enrollment, or electives that match your interests.
- Start early and revisit your IGP annually to ensure you’re staying on track.
- For Parents: Get involved with your student’s IGP. This plan helps clarify how each class fits into their long-term goals, whether they’re aiming for college, trade school, or the workforce. Counselors can guide you and your student in balancing their current academic needs with future aspirations. Use the IGP to avoid last-minute surprises in senior year and make the most of high school opportunities.

At CCPA, we are diving right back into this second semester with meaningful hands-on learning! Our 9th and 10th graders are embarking on an innovative project exploring the role of AI in education. Students will research both the benefits and challenges of AI tools, ultimately crafting a comprehensive AI policy for our charter high school that will guide staff and student usage. This project not only equips students with critical thinking and research skills, but also gives them a voice in shaping how cutting-edge technology is integrated into their learning environment.
Meanwhile, our 11th and 12th graders are delving into historical conflicts in the United States, exploring how these issues continue to impact us today. They will then produce documentary-style videos to educate the public about the lasting effects of these conflicts and propose actionable solutions to address them. These interdisciplinary, project-based opportunities reflect our Montessori-inspired commitment to fostering student agency, empathy, and critical problem-solving skills. As we kick off this semester, it’s clear that our students are ready to make a difference both in and beyond the classroom!

January is Eastern European Heritage Month – meet the Dubinetsky Family, our Slavic Ambassadors
We are the Dubinetsky family of 7 with Slavic origins. I was born in Kazakhstan and my husband was born in Latvia, but his parents are both from Ukraine.
We are so grateful to be part of the Cottonwood Community. As a family, we love serving together in our local church. We also enjoy game nights and exploring new places through travel. Cooking meals together is a cherished tradition in our home and helps to bring us closer.
Recently, we’ve discovered a new passion for skiing and we are thankful to the Cottonwood School for making this possible. Thanks to the school’s support, our children have had opportunities to experience skiing, visit museums, and participate in many other exciting activities that have broadened their horizons.
We deeply appreciate the experiences and memories we are creating together as a family!
To celebrate Eastern European Heritage Month, we have a wonderful opportunity to make a traditional Slavic dish of Pelmeni/Varenyky with two Slavic cooking instructors. This event will take place at the campus in the school’s kitchen on January 22nd. We have added a second session, so please sign up for this immersive cooking class!
